Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghawal flagged off Konark International Cyclothon Curtain-Raiser event at New Delhi
New Delhi: Ahead of 2nd Konark International Cyclothon to be held next month, a curtain-raiser event was inaugurated in the national Capital today. With lots of fanfare and media flare, Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs Shri Arjun Ram Meghawal flagged off the LET’s PEDAL National Cycling Expedition 2016 at Ghitorni. More than one hundred bicycle enthusiasts, celebrities and corporate leaders participated in the cyclothon covering 20 KMs from Ghitorni to India Gate via Qutub Minar.
Shri Meghwal, who himself is a seasoned cyclist and goes to parliament and his constituency by bicycle, said the cheering crowd, “India is a signatory to the Paris Agreement and committed to reduce its carbon footprint. It’s good that the youngsters are coming forward for the green cause. This campaign ‘cycling to work’ is a welcome step in right direction.”
Odisha’s Panchayati Raj and Law Minister, Dr. Arun Kumar Sahoo joined the closing ceremony at India Gate as Chief Guest. Praising the efforts of the organiser, Dr Sahoo reminded the Journey of Late Biju Pattnaik from Cuttack to Peshawar. This 3000 KMs long Cyclothon by Late Biju Patnaik and his friends in pre-independence time was perhaps the first cyclothon effort by a proud Odia leader, said Shri Sahoo. Cheering up the audience Dr. Sahoo said, the history is repeating itself and the Lets Pedal National campaign is happening from the soil of Odisha.
Olympian sprinter and the fastest Indian female Dutee Chand was full of praise for the organiser and said, the habit of cycling increases you heart functioning and keeps you fit and fine. Cycling and swimming is the best sports for fitness and every sports person is trained cycling for increasing stamina, she further added.
In his address to the participant Shri Sudhir Kumar Dash, the organiser of Konark International Cyclothon emphasised the increasing pollution in Metro cities. We have one world and one life. Not only our health is in danger with increasing level of pollution, but he cautioned what legacy will we be giving to the next generation if we do not correct is a most polluted environment, he emphasised. While raising concern about road safety for cycling commuter, Shri Dash appealed to the minister for a surgical solution for cyclist on road is to bring a law for traffic management of pedestrian and cycling concerning road safety.
The future Bright of Para Olympics Shri Jagwinder Singh said, he is looking forward to the 2000 km ride from Konark to Delhi next month. It’s all in the mind and the “Yes I can” attitude keeps you high in everything that you do. I never feel, I, in anyway is lesser than anyone and being armless is my strength, Jagwinder added.
CRESPAI’s secretary general Ramesh Chandra Goel, partner Lexport Srinibas Kotni, HYPER QUALITY Director Finance Jaianand Daftuar, CA Pawan Agarawal, Partner BDO Consulting Manish Bhatija Professor Sadanand Sahoo, and Author and Journalist Subhransu Panda among others participated the cyclothon to cheer up cycle enthusiasts.
2nd edition of Konark International Cyclothon (KIC) and the Let’s Pedal National Expedition 2016 are going to be happened in Odisha next month. The KIC will be started from Bhubaneswar on 17th December 2016. More than a thousand cycle enthusiasts will participate in this grand event and reach Konark, covering 90KMs enrouting Dhauli, Puri, Marine drive road and some other heritage places.
The Let’s Pedal will be commenced from Konark on the same day, i.e. on 17th December afternoon. A selected team of seasoned cyclists will participate in this fortnight long cycle expedition. Enrouting 20 cities, 6 states and 15 heritage places the team will reach Delhi on 31st December and there will be a Grand felicitation and cultural fest at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on 1st January 2017 on the eve of New Year.
