BIG AMBITIONS DON’T SETTLE

Shri Piyush Goyal, Hon’ble Minister of State (IC) for Power, Coal, New and Renewable Energy, Government of India was the Chief Guest at the 90th Annual Day of Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC). SRCC has developed itself over the years retaining its prestigious position as the foremost of institutions dedicated to Commerce and Economics education in the country. At this celebration Shri Piyush Goyal addressed the brightest minds of the country encouraging them to think out of the box.

He began with elucidating the report card of his government’s performance over the last two years focusing on the challenges he faced as the minister of the sector which is of vital importance to any economy’s overall development. Giving an anecdote of his experience with Coal India Limited (CIL), he quoted how when he took charge, the annual growth was just 1-2% and how while setting the targets for the coming year; he had proposed a growth rate of 10%. He was even ridiculed for setting such an unrealistic goal, but he believed higher the aim, higher will be the achievement. Under his charge CIL was able to achieve the growth rate of 6.9% in the first year and 8.6% in the second, recoiling from the
9.8% probable growth rate just because of the excessive coal stock which was in stark contrast to the shortage a few years ago. Thus, he encouraged the young generation to “aim big and go for it”. He talked about how most people underestimate their abilities when the block is in the mind and not in the ability of the people to perform. He also mentioned the achievement of Mr. Mrityunjay Sharma, III-year B.Com. (H) student of SRCC who holds a Guinness World Record for playing the keyboard for 127 hours 8 minutes 38 seconds and praised him for his over urging ambition.

He recalled the memorable speech that Shri Narendra Modi delivered in the same college in 2013. He outlined India’s potential to lead the world in the field of energy efficiency highlighting UDAY scheme in the process. He further enunciated the principles underlying the actions of his government which include decisive and trustworthy leadership, accountability, outcome oriented dynamic approach, root-cause analysis for problem solving and sustainability.

His overall address emanated positivity and motivated the young impressionable minds to aspire for excellence.
