Odisha: Three decades after, Potteru canal water reach tail ends

potteruReport by Kishore Dash; Bhubaneswar: WHAT may make the Chief Minister Naveen Pattnaik , who also holds the portfolio of Water Resource Department happy , as the canal water has been made to reach almost the tail-ends in the district for the first time since the inception of the project 30 years back thereby bringing smiles on the faces of thousands of the farmers residing at the tail ends of the canal over the years.As the water has reached the tail ends , the target of irrigating 61.040 hectares of land under the Potteru Irrigation Project has almost been achieved.

The consistent efforts made by the project officials with all support from the state Government to provide water to every field through proper lining of the canals has finally yielded positive results with the water reaching the tail ends of the both the Gompakonda Main Canal( GMC)and Tamasa Main Canal(TMC), said the Balimela based Potteru Irrigation Project Chief Construction Engineer Harshabardhan Mohanty.

The achievements of the M.V-79 based Potteru Canal Division No-III under the Potteru Irrigation Project is clearly visible at ground zero with the tail ends of all the branch canal, distrubutaries, minors, sub- minors of both the GMC and TMC are filled with full water which never happened earlier in the past.

Canal waters has reached almost the tail ends of one branch canal,three distributaries, 33-minors ,154-sub-minors of Gompakonda Main canal, followed by 4-distributaries, 19-minors and 79-Subminors of the Tamasa Main Canal under M.V-79 based Potteru Canal Division-III which is said to be a remarkable achievement of the division thrreby irrigating water to 38.012 hectares of agriculture lands .Distributaries like Motu, Kunanpalli and minors like Muraliguda and Koikonda which are the tail ends of the canals are now filled with water where the farmers have started raising multiple crops.

Contacted,M.V-79 based Potteru Canal Division Executive Engineer Chandra Sekhar Mishra said to this paper that efforts have been made to make the water reach the tail-ends of all parts of the canal adding efforts are being made to ensure that water is delivered up to the remaining tail ends soon for which tenders have already been floated.

It is for the first time that water has been made to reach the tail-ends by the Irrigation Department in the remote and tribal dominated Motu and Podia areas, said Motu Sarpanch Janaki Dari while talking to this paper. Now the farmers can have good crops with water reaching at their doorsteps, she said.

Like me hundreds of farmers who are thriving on agriculture now can have irrigate their lands well , said Dinesh Sardar, a farmer of M.V-65 village near the tail end of the canal.The canal water has also reached the tail ends of the canals under Potteru Irrigation Division , claimed it’s Executive Engineer B.B Mishra.

Notably, the Potteru Irrigation Project having two canals, GMC and TMC originating from the Surlikobda batrage water released from the Balimela Power House was approved by the Planning Commission in 1973 for providing irrigation facilities to the agriculture lands in the district.The state government was approved the project in 1975 which started commissioning later on.

The project work being monitored by the Water Resources Commissioner-cum-Secretary P.K.Jena has come out successful in making the water reach the tail ends of the canals in the district, the intelligentsia here remarked.
