Living Legend Birju Maharaj Takes The Centrestage at 17th Bharat Rang Mahotsav

New Delhi: Yet another Living Legend graced the occasion of 17th Bharat Rang Mahotsav. Pandit Birju Maharaj along with his troupe which included his son Deepak Maharaj and his senior disciple Saswati Sen were present to give lecture andmaharaj demonstrations on Kathak style of dancing which originated in North India; today in Bahumukh auditorium, NSD Campus.

Padma Vibhushan awardee Birju Maharaj expressed his contentment and shared his experience of early days when Kathak Kendra was in the campus itself, said, “ Dance, Theatre and music are all of one family in which acting, talking through the eyes, the face and the body, all unite. I firmly believe that when there were no words in this world, these gestures with the eyes, face and the body did the talking.”

Saswati , who is an eminent Kathak dancer believes that Birju Maharaj brought about a renaissance in the field of Kathak. She initiated the demonstration with a tribute to Lord Krishna, the presiding deity of Kathak. The stage was then taken over by Maharaj himself and he demonstrated a few of his productions in front of the audience. He shared some instances from his compositions and enthralled the audience. He bound the people and took them down memory lane of his journey of becoming a Kathak dancer. This was followed by a performance by his son Deepak Maharaj who portrayed a garland of footwork art.

Real life instances like playing hockey and throwing and catching of a ball, all these were shown through the medium of Kathak which was spellbinding.

Birju Maharaj was felicitated by Prof. Waman Kendre, Director, National School of Drama said, “ It was our wish and were trying really hard that these kind of Living Legends keep coming here and share their experiences so that everybody can learn from them.”

“Nature, Life and everything else that is connected to art – nobody else other than Birju Maharaj can describe them with so much beauty,” Mr Kendre added.
