kissjuddBhubaneswar: Governor Dr. S.C. Jamir conferred KISS Humanitarian Award on Ms. Ashley Judd, Hollywood Actor, Activist & Global Goodwill Ambassador, UNFPA in a function organized at Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) in presence of Dr. Justice Dalveer Bhandari, Judge, International Court of Justice, The Hague, Diego Palacios, UNFPA India Country Representative and Country Director, Bhutan, Principal Secretary to the Governor C.J. Venugopal, famous singer Jitendra Haripal and others.
Presenting the award Governor said, Ms. Judd has been a tireless champion of change and a voice for the voiceless and a strong promoter of women’s rights besides a successful Hollywood actor. She is honoured today for her activism and dedication to the cause of empowering women and adolescent girls, passionate advocacy against gender-based violence and discrimination, protecting the rights and dignity of young people.
We have a long history of addressing women’s human rights and much progress has been made in securing women’s rights across the world in recent decades. However, important gaps remain and women’s plights are constantly changing, with new manifestations of discrimination against them. Some groups of women face additional forms of discrimination based on their age, ethnicity, nationality, religion, health status, marital status, education and socio-economic status, among other grounds. These intersecting forms of discrimination are crucial when developing measures and responses to combat discrimination against women, Governor added.
Speaking on human rights, Governor said human rights are under pressure worldwide. Too often, human rights are dismissed as a luxury. Too often, security concerns are used as an excuse to suspend certain human rights. But there is no such thing as a pause button for human rights. Protecting human beings and respecting their rights are vital for any stable and secure society.
Governor called upon to advance economic and social rights especially by promoting corporate social and environmental responsibility. Our duty is to fulfill our citizens’ aspiration for a healthy environment, for themselves and for future generations. Our duty is to combat climate change, which undermines fundamental rights, by implementing the Paris agreement. There is no time to lose; we must act now, he observed.
